Worlds of Percussion

When: Mon., Nov. 5, 7:30 p.m. 2012

Musician Tatsuya Nakatani is called a "percussionist," but that doesn't even begin to hint at the strange things Nakatani can do with sound. Running a homemade bow against the edge of a cymbal, he creates a range of soft and jagged atmospheric tones; scraping along the top of a drum, he produces creepy screeches. Some sounds a bit like Japanese folk music (obvious, yes, given his origin), but the rest just needs to be experienced. See the artist, who's performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Smithsonian Institution, at Marmalade at Smokebrush (219 W. Colorado Ave., #210, at 7:30 tonight for $12 to $15. — Edie Adelstein
