William Elliot Whitmore

When: Fri., Nov. 19 2010

William Elliott Whitmore has an unmistakable sound — he's one of those artists who takes the stage, opens his mouth and immediately makes everyone in the room do a double-take. At least, that's what happened when I saw him four years ago in Washington state. His wasn't even the act I came to see, but I left the show with two of his CDs and a hunger for others. Actually, it was more like a thirst — his cracked, throaty roar invokes images of the Dust Bowl and several quarts of mean whiskey. Those of you 21 or older, I implore you to hear the Iowa native play his dark, literary take on alt-country at 8 tonight at the Triple Nickel Tavern (26 S. Wahsatch Ave., 555nickel.com). Tickets are $12 at the door or $10 in advance — get them at the Nickel or at the Leechpit (708 N. Weber St.). — Claire Swinford
