More than 100 newspapers nationwide plan to publish unique editorials on or near Aug. 16, themed around "the dangers of the administration's assault on the press," according to organizing entity The Boston Globe.
Generally, these editors' notes will call for the protection of press freedom as a coordinated response to attacks on the First Amendment through repeated "fake news" rhetoric.
Multiple press agencies have voiced support, including the Association of Alternative Newsmedia, to which the Indy belongs.
Though the Indy does stand by the spirit of the effort and its message, we understand the hesitation of some dissenting newspapers who feel, in the words of one opposing alt-weekly, that it's a mainstream media "BS gesture."
We worry the editorials may appear as self-serving, ultimately portraying a thin-skinned Fourth Estate. But for what it's worth here, we do affirm: We are not your enemy.
