Style of music, in 10 words or less: "Atmospheric music made with emotions"

Debut performance: 2009
Recordings: We Are Not a Glum Lot (2014)
Why they matter: Winners in this category for three of the last four years, We Are Not a Glum Lot got their start as high-school kids playing house parties and all-ages clubs. It would take five years and a couple hundred gigs before they got around to releasing their self-titled debut CD this past February. Produced by Ryan Spradlin of El Toro de la Muerte, it features instrumentals with weird time signatures alongside more vocal-driven tracks that combine Weezer-style pop with dronier post-rock atmospherics. With the recent departure of electric violinist Colin Foxwell, the band is focusing on what frontman Sam Erickson describes as a "stripped-down power trio" sound with a less-is-more attitude. We Are Not a Glum Lot are currently writing new material as a three-piece for a sophomore effort that will hopefully arrive before its 10-year anniversary.
2nd place: El Toro de la Muerte
