The sun is out, the flowers are blooming, and locals are eager to head into the great outdoors. But changes are afoot across the region, so keep these updates in mind.

• Trail closures: Portions of the trail system in Jones Park will be closed from June 8-17, to accommodate blasting needed to reroute a trail (Forest Service 667) in the Bear Creek Watershed that includes Jones Park and the Kineo Mountain area. Impacted trails include portions of Bear Creek Trail 666 and Jones Park Trail 667. Other trail closures may also be necessary. The project is being completed by the U.S. Forest Service and El Paso County, in conjunction with Trails Unlimited. Meanwhile, don't head up to the popular Crags trailhead quite yet. The trail near Mueller State Park has been closed since January while the Forest Service removes hazardous trees and does other maintenance. No specific date has been set for reopening.

• Grant: The city received a $35,000 2017 Doppelt Fund grant to fund Phase 1 of the Legacy Loop, a multi-use trail around downtown inspired by the vision of city founder Gen. William Jackson Palmer.
