“Wish I’d written that” song: “Magazine” off Control by Pedro the Lion. It is concise and impactful and a perfectly written song. Every time I hear it, I end up with it in my head for days, and it’s one of those records I never have to be in the mood for. It’s near perfect.
First record I bought with my own money: I bought both Satellite by P.O.D. and Two Lefts Don’t Make a Right ... but Three Do by Relient K when I was 10 with Christmas money from my grandma. I still know every word to both.
Favorite song to cover: “Blood in Your Mouth” by Colour Revolt. It’s a really intense song with a lot of attitude, and it’s a blast to try and represent the “sass” that makes the song so great.
My latest online discovery: SZA’s record called Ctrl. I discovered her because Kendrick Lamar is on one of her songs. She’s an incredible singer and the album is really good.
Essential Saturday listening: The song “Under the Pressure,” and the entire album Lost in the Dream, by The War on Drugs. Everything kind of goes on for a long time, and always gives you that extra repetition of the part you like. It’s super satisfying.
Artist more people should know about: Infinite Me. They’re our good buds from Minnesota and a mind-blowing live band. They’re mega loud and dynamic, but also articulate and convincing. We’ve been preaching them to people for years now, and they still don’t get enough recognition.
Guilty pleasure: That’s tough. I get flak for a lot of things I listen to, and I kind of had to stop caring a long time ago out of necessity. I suppose my individual love of Dashboard Confessional and our collective love of Taylor Swift could be seen that way, though.
