When contemplating the late-’70s/early-‘80s genre that’s come to be known as Yacht Rock, artists like Prince, Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney are rarely among the first that come to mind. But even the most talented cover band can only get so far with a repertoire that’s confined to core artists like Michael McDonald, Toto and Hall & Oates, so The Yacht Rock Review have filled out their set with songs from Prince, Stevie, Paul and other heavy-hitters from the era.
The former indie-rockers started out with a single tongue-in-cheek Yacht Rock gig in their native Atlanta and have parlayed it into more than a decade of ceaseless touring. It doesn’t hurt that the band — whose current jaunt also includes a May 9 Boulder Theater show — has a lucrative contract with entertainment mega-promoter Live Nation.
But what matters most is the band’s ability to make a full evening of easy-listening nostalgia sail by faster than a three-hour cruise, while providing a safe space for fans to wear their gold-braided captain’s hats with pride.
