The New Pornographers, "Whiteout Conditions"
During sessions for Whiteout Conditions
, Canada’s favorite supergroup The New Pornographers faced challenges that threatened to dull the edge of their signature sound. Transient member Dan Bejar was on hiatus, and as the sessions evolved, keyboards began to supplant guitars, more than on any of the band’s six previous studio albums. Yet the tight songwriting of A.C. Newman and Neko Case still manages to take these 11 new songs beyond the lackluster 2014 album Brill Bruisers. The first five tracks pack a crisp, persistent set of power-pop riffs, which particularly suit the distinct and precise rhythms on songs like “This Is the World of the Theater.” And while the lyrics drift into sci-fi reverie by the closing “Avalanche Alley,” when dance music is this good, we’ll let The New Pornographers reveal their inner nerds.
