Donating your body to medical research, or to saving the life of another in desperate straits, is, in a way, granting another victory to life over death.
- Becky Smiley
Becky Smiley of Old Colorado City is a doctor.
Would you consider donating your body to medical research? Absolutely. I was able to learn anatomy and physiology because others donated their bodies to science. I'd return the favor by donating mine.
Does your driver's license identify you as a donor? It does.
What health issue would you most like your donation to help? As a pediatrician, I'd pick Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disorder. It might help children not have to go through adulthood taking insulin and having organ problems.
Do you know anyone whose life has been saved by organ donation? Several of my friends have had kidney transplants and I've cared for patients who've had bone marrow transplants. My mom has donated human lenses from cataract surgery.
- Patricia Hansen
Patricia Hansen of the Palmer Park area is a registered nurse.
Would you consider donating your body to medical research? Yes. The essence of who I am will have left my body, so what happens to it after that will no longer matter to me. If my body helps someone else live, all the better.
Are you identified as a donor on your driver's license? I am.
If you could choose, what health issue would you like your donation to help? I'd go with autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis or some other inflammatory disease.
Do you know anyone whose life has been saved by organ donation? I know several people with transplanted hearts and livers. Also, I worked in the ICU for many years and talked with family members of dying patients who decided to go ahead with organ donations.
Would it make you squeamish to have another person's organs in your body? Eyes, maybe, although I'd be honored to be a recipient of such generosity.
- Colin Flynn
Colin Flynn of Rumson, New Jersey, works for an electric car manufacturer.
Would you donate your body to medical research? Absolutely. I won't need my body parts after I'm done with them.
Are you identified as a donor on your driver's license? Let me check. It doesn't indicate that I am, but it should. My previous license did.
What health issue would you most like to help if you donated your body? Something vital, like heart or liver problems.
Has the life of anyone you know been saved by an organ donation? Phil Lesh, the bass player for the Grateful Dead, has a transplanted liver. He gives a talk at the end of every show urging everyone to be organ donors.
