The English Beat

When: Mon., March 21 2011

A bassist I know mastered his instrument simply by playing along to the English Beat's debut album. It was a smart move, really, given how perfectly English Beat singles like "Mirror in the Bathroom," "Save it for Later" and "Twist & Crawl" managed to transform ska revivalism into something infectious, sophisticated and ridiculously syncopated. After just three albums, the band split, with members resurfacing in General Public and Fine Young Cannibals. But singer/songwriter/guitarist Dave Wakeling has since resurrected the English Beat franchise, while managing to keep its music as authentic and alive as ever. The band's at the Black Sheep (2106 E. Platte Ave., blacksheeprocks.com) at 7 p.m., for $20 in advance, $25 at the door, all-ages. — Bill Forman
