One of the genius moves of Stan Lee’s Marvel universe was to create superhero characters who wore their insecurities on their skin-tight sleeves. The Aquabats! do that, too.
The promotional pitch for the costumed band’s “Bring Back the Aquabats!” Kickstarter campaign, which was set up to raise funds for their new album and children’s TV series, is divided into three sections: Goals, Rewards and Risks. This last category opens with the disclaimer: “This won’t work, and no one actually likes The Aquabats!...?”
But more than $600,000 in pledges later, it’s clear that Huntington Beach’s best-known ska, surf ‘n’ synthpop slingers are liked by tons of people, or at least a few big super-PACs. Either way, they’re back on the road, taking a family-friendly victory lap that happens to coincide with their 25th anniversary. And yes, they still sound like DEVO.
