The trial of former Sheriff Terry Maketa was to start on June 27 but possibly with two fewer charges than originally delivered by a grand jury in May 2016. Prosecutors in the 18th Judicial District sought to dismiss charges of kidnapping and false imprisonment on June 21. (The 4th Judicial District Attorney's Office recused itself.)
Maketa, who served as sheriff from 2003 to the last day of 2014, is charged with extortion and conspiracy, tampering with a witness or victim and conspiracy, along with three misdemeanor counts of official misconduct. Former Undersheriff Paula Presley faces the same charges as Maketa. Former Commander John San Agustin is charged with kidnapping and false imprisonment. Presley's and San Agustin's trials are slated for this fall.
