Strain review: Cookies Kush

I’ve always hated running. Trudging around a track in gym class is a middle school nightmare. But at 45, with an ever-augmenting beer-belly, I decided I had to do it. My friend said her dad, a runner and a stoner, would smoke a bowl before going for a run. That made sense. I tried some Sativa — a Skywalker vape pen — and it was sort of the opposite of what I wanted. It made me think about how far I’d gone and still had to go and all of that shit. But I burned a big bud of this Cookies Kush and put on a podcast and I was hooked. I marveled at the dappling of the light on the sidewalk, so completely absorbed in the movement of the city around me that I forget my legs were running.

The Cookies Kush is a hybrid of OG Kush and Girl Scout Cookies, which is itself a hybrid of OG Kush and Durban Poison, a pure Sativa. The Cookies Kush gives you about 75 percent chill body high, but throws on a dash of mental alertness. It’s the perfect antidote for the monotony of a jog, which is sort of counterintuitive, because this sort of Indica-dominant strain is supposed to leave you glued to the couch. But if you are ready to roll and take the hits and immediately run out the door, you never get that weird tiredness. (I also find it’s good to have all of your accoutrements together — when I smoked some before going out one day and didn’t have my stuff together, it took twice as long).

If you’re too lazy to run, Cookies Kush is also is a perfect walking weed that makes you feel a little like an R. Crumb cartoon, with your feet sticking out in front of you in a way that isn’t quite proportional or otherwise disobeys the rules of space and time, but in a pleasant, low-key way.

Cookies Kush is also a chill strain for reading and pondering the universe — without all the existential dread that often entails these days. It reduces anxiety without obliterating the ability to think through its causes. And from a purely hedonistic perspective, it’s got a beautiful taste and smell. There are so many over-the-top flavors bred into buds by combining different terpenes — the plant compounds that cause smell and flavor in both pot and pine, marijuana and mint — but because of the prevalence of Kush, Cookies Kush has an almost archetypal weed flavor, like what you remember when you remember the taste of good pot.

The Indica qualities of this strain really kick in after a run, so for me, I like to do it in the evening, after work. Then I feel an extra surge of energy. And after a shower and a couple more bowls, I sleep a gorgeous sleep, that can be, alas, rather hard to rise from.
