Squawk Coffee builds on success started in Austin

  • Griffin Swartzell
Squawk Coffee opened last December, and its owners have some clout already. Owners Dave Swainston and Victor Levi have been in the biz for 13 years, spending their first 12 running Austin, Texas-based Genuine Joe Coffee House, which they sold. Squawk brews the same air-roasted Kiva Coffee Roasters beans, also from Texas, that they used at Genuine Joe. It’s scorching hot out when we visit, so we get a medium daily special pistachio mocha ($5.34) whipped into a frappé. It’s on the sweeter side, with Hollander chocolate and Monin pistachio syrups, but the result’s less a wild and wacky taste adventure than a clean cocoa profile — lovely. We’re also fond of the Java Rocket smoothie ($5.76), a blend of banana, iced coffee, mocha and peanuts. The leading banana-nut flavor blend works just fine, and a little roasty coffee background pleases, but the drink overall wants for a stronger chocolate flavor. All the same, it’s a great energy boost and a real refreshment on a hot summer day.
