Solar Mamas

Tilonia, India's Barefoot College has been working to empower women and assist with energy, education, health care and water resources in rural communities internationally for the last 40 years. The film Solar Mamas, screening for free at 6 and 8 tonight in the Tim Gill Center for Public Media (315 E. Costilla St.,, centers on one of the college's solar courses and a batch of its remarkable female students. Picture being illiterate and having never even left your village, and having to travel abroad and absorb a solar technology crash-course in six months, with the hope of returning with a trade that makes you self-reliant. Then add patriarchal structures and cultural barriers to the mix ... prepare to be inspired. — Matthew Schniper
