Singin' for the library

Los Angeles Baritones harmonize for library benefit

The Los Angeles Baritones, celebrated vocal artists Bradley P. Baker, Michael Paul Smith and Richard Taylor, will perform Thursday night at Packard Hall to benefit the Shivers Fund, an 11-year love-project set up and maintained by Peggy Shivers and her husband, Clarence.

The couple, Peggy Shivers says, initially planned to sponsor one event -- the couple's 25th wedding-anniversary party in 1993 -- when they hosted an art show and invited their guests to contribute to a fund benefiting Pikes Peak Library District. "But our friends enjoyed it so much, they all wanted to come back."

The result has been a three-concert series every year, a "celebration fundraiser" every other Thanksgiving, and the maintenance and growth of a comprehensive African-American historical and cultural collection for the community. The Shivers' collection includes books, CDs, videos and DVDs, says Cathy Genato, Pikes Peak Library District public relations director, and it's available to everyone.

"We've gotten a great deal of support from the community, and we so appreciate that," says Peggy Shivers. She's thrilled that -- thanks to the fund's diverse benefactors and the public's support -- everyone can hear the L.A. Baritones' eclectic program.

From spirituals to classical arias, the L.A. Baritones choose their own music: art songs, jazz and gospel are all part of their repertoire. They also encourage young people to be involved in the arts: Baker, Taylor and Smith will talk about their musical backgrounds, experiences and goals during "Classical Chat with Youth," a free workshop for young people and interested grownups on Friday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. at Penrose Library. In addition, before the trio's concert, a meet-the-artists reception will be hosted by Colorado College's president, Richard Celeste, and his wife, Jaqueline Lundquist.
