Signs of Life: Photograms by Robert Buelteman

When: May 7-Aug. 3 2014

So first, Robert Buelteman finds some total darkness to work in. Then he takes plant parts he's whittled down to transparency, pops 'em on a metal sheet, sandwiches it all between Plexiglas, and floats the sandwich in liquid silicone. With us so far? OK. Next, using jumper cables, he zaps it with 80,000 volts, and some physics stuff happens, followed by a bit of hand-painting with light, and voilà! — glowing-eerie-beautiful botanical images that you can drink in beginning at 5:30 tonight at the free opening reception for Signs of Life: Photograms by Robert Buelteman. The show runs through Aug. 3 at Denver Botanic Gardens (1007 York St., Denver,; RSVP at — Mary Jo Meade
