Folding creperie

Wholly Crepe, inside Chapel Hills Mall (1710 Briargate Blvd.), announced its sudden closure earlier this week. Owner Blandine Brutel says she realized: "If you want to offer quality food, you cannot do it in a mall, because people expect to pay for cheap food when they go to a mall." Asked if she'll move the business elsewhere, she responds, "I am open to any proposition if anyone wants to hire me to install a crêpe station in a location that is better suited than the mall."

Taste of new Orient

In the space recently vacated by the now-defunct A Taste of New Orleans (333 N. Tejon St.), Tomo Sushi owner John Ra says he plans to open a new eatery around the first of December. He doesn't have a name yet, but he has a general concept: "Something simple for the high school and college kids ... real basic, quick and cheap."

By that, he means items like teriyaki avocado cheeseburgers and teriyaki chicken bowls, with prices around $5. When asked if he's leery of a space that's spurned other dining outfits, he jokes that he has a good track record in finicky locations, citing success with Miyake (his former spot on Austin Bluffs Parkway) and both Tomo locations, which also rejected previous businesses.


• Good news for beer drinkers who miss Arctic Craft Brewery: The man behind it, John Dunfee, says he'll return to the brew business as early as spring 2011. Dunfee says he's looking at opening Odyssey Brewing Co. as a brewpub concept somewhere near the Powers Boulevard corridor.

• Brewer Chris Wright, of the planned Pikes Peak Brewing Co. (, says he has narrowed his Tri-Lakes location search down to Monument. The tentative opening date has backed up to around spring 2011.

À la carte

Nawlins Restaurant ( celebrates its one-year anniversary at 3317 Cinema Point Drive this weekend with additions to its menu: fresh oysters, a broiled crab cakes entrée, a shrimp dish on spoonbread (a fluffier, often sweeter variant of cornbread) and more. Expect to see some of this healthier fare featured in casual wine dinners on Tuesdays starting Oct. 1.

• Partner Raphael Sassower says Il Postino is just weeks away from its debut at 123 E. Pikes Peak Ave. The largely Mediterranean/Italian-style eatery will be the first element of the new Mining Exchange Hotel venture to open. With input from UCCS professor and USOC nutrition adviser Nanna Meyer, the menu focuses on nutritious offerings for all eaters, including vegans and the gluten-free crowd. Chef Jeff Gebott, formerly of Ted's Montana Grill, says it will also feature sustainably grown foods whenever possible.
