The upper Nile

The Nile Café (685-1410) recently opened at 954 Manitou Ave., the former site of Manitou Springs' Machu Picchu Store, and is serving from-scratch breakfast pastries, lunch and dinner from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. But as early as May 15 (pending city approval), the outfit could begin 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. hookah service.

Co-owner Michael Ezzat says he and business partner Jimmy Sabry have both come to the Springs in the past six months. In addition to standards from the region, Ezzat says the café will feature a handful of authentic Egyptian dishes, such as an Egyptian-style veggie platter and falafel made with different spices than popular Lebanese and Turkish styles.

Will bike for food

Dig this innovative new business concept: Biocycle, a small group of local gardeners, will bike to your home or business (downtown, west side and Cheyenne Mountain areas only) and pick up your compost. In turn, you'll receive a small organic vegetable basket (during the growing season). The price: $60 per month.

Collected compost will be pedaled to the Pikes Peak Urban Gardens' new, four-acre Harlan Wolfe Ranch gardens (905 W. Cheyenne Road, 210-8309), which in part supplies Care and Share Food Bank with produce donations.

Save the windmill, make room for chicken

Those driving on Garden of the Gods Road may have noticed a sign at the old Hungry Farmer restaurant noting that the space is under contract. A series of calls led me to a Chick-fil-A rep's voice mail, so at this point, we may want to strike up the band for the chicken dance.

Meanwhile, one concerned citizen who "holds fond memories" of the iconic Hungry Farmer windmill is working hard to save it. He recently purchased the structure for $1,000 at an auction by the site's previous owner. The problem, he learned, is that it'll cost several thousand more dollars to get the windmill transported off the property. Nawlins Bar B Q & Seafood (7685 McLaughlin Road, Peyton, 494-8558) will host a fundraiser for the National Kidney Foundation from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., on May 9, featuring a beer and wine tasting, 75-cent drafts, and more.

The Warehouse Restaurant and Gallery (25 W. Cimarron St., 475-8880) began serving its new summer menu last week. Also, happy hours now run 4 to 7 p.m. weekdays, with half-off drafts, martinis and pub menu apps.

Paravicini's Italian Bistro's 2802 W. Colorado Ave. location ( hosts Wednesday Night Small Bites & Wine Flights, featuring $7.95 small plates and $9.95 to $11.95 three-wine flights.
