Tabor Mountain moves, Crave earns big burger nod

Godzilla-sized disclaimer right up front on this one, in the interest of full disclosure: I have a direct tie to one of the businesses mentioned below, but I don't intend for this to be an endorsement for it. There's some legitimate food news here, people, and I have an inside scoop. So here goes.

Tabor Mountain Bakehouse (, which only six months ago grew out of Gotta Love It! Market into its own storefront in the Mountain Mama Natural Foods shopping center, is already expanding again due to demand. This time, the outfit has moved into the former La Petite Maison building at 1015 W. Colorado Ave., with additional food selections and wellness programming promised in the added square footage.

TM's flexible menu of gluten-, dairy-, refined sugar-, corn-, egg- and soy-free products, with additional catering to raw-food, vegan and grain-free paleo diets plus specific allergen requests (by custom pre-order), will grow to incorporate new products such as cinnamon rolls, focaccia and baguette breads for house sandwiches, and bread bowls for house soups. The deli-style service (Tuesday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) allows for quick to-go or in-house dining, alongside Wi-Fi and locally sourced coffee, tea or Kombucha.

To my disclaimer: Owner Kristi Hayes has carved out space in the building for a new yoga studio, Songbird Yoga, operated by my fiancée who recently began baking for TM part-time. The two women envision convenient crossovers, such as a morning class followed by a light meal.

"We're embracing the connection between food, health and wellness," says Hayes, a former nurse, noting on-site Reiki and massage offerings plus a planned "therapeutic" garden plot. TM tentatively plans to have doors open Friday, March 8, with both businesses hosting a grand-opening celebration on the 15th. Expect samples, demos and more.

Crave accolades

A big congrats to Crave Real Burgers (7465 N. Academy Blvd., for earning a spot on Zagat's list of The Best Burgers in 25 Cities. This comes on the heels of winning the People's Choice award at the 2012 Denver Burger Battle, and shortly thereafter placing as one of the top finalists at the World Food Championships in Las Vegas.

The Castle Rock company expanded into the Denver area with a Highlands Ranch location in December. It also qualified for a Colorado Proud certification, reflecting use of all Colorado-raised beef and seasonal produce. Owner Jeff Richard, asked about further expansion, says, "Eventually, sure — but we aren't doing anything for at least a year ... we're trying to make sure that we don't screw up."
