Second annual Polar Plunge

When: Sat., Dec. 4 2010

Go to warmer states, and you'll find event-filled weekends in the spring, summer and early fall. Here, the first Saturday in December is brimming with choices, whether it's 5 degrees or 45. There's a free children's Holiday Magic program at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum from 10 to 3 (215 S. Tejon St., cspm.org), with activities, exhibits and carols, along with $1 all-day parking in the city garage at Colorado and Nevada avenues. Starting at 1, there's the annual Polar Plunge at Prospect Lake (free to spectators), with participants who raise at least $85 for Special Olympics Colorado allowed to "enjoy" a swim in the icy lake plus a "Freezin' for a Reason" T-shirt. Then it's back downtown for the city's annual Festival of Lights parade, which starts at 5:50 at Tejon and St. Vrain streets, running south to Vermijo Ave. — Ralph Routon

Price: Free; $85 in donations for participants
