Savelli’s has been an icon of Manitou Avenue since 1998, which, to me, is a little surprising — I’d swear it’s been around longer than I have. But while I make mistakes, the Savelli’s kitchen doesn’t seem to. It’s exactly what one would expect from a neighborhood standard. My dining companion and I pick up a build-your-own calzone ($9.75) and a chicken Philly sub ($8.99).

The former, which we get with ham, bacon and feta alongside the standard Muenster/mozzarella blend, comes glossy and golden brown. The interior is a touch doughy, but the decision to serve marinara in a cup on the side instead of in the calzone proves smart and flavorful. We’re largely happy with the sandwich, too. The bread’s got that sturdy crust and tender interior we like for a Philly. Chicken strips meet bell peppers, red onions and provolone for a pretty orthodox flavor profile, with mayo adding the fattiness lost by ditching beef for bird. Side pasta salad performs fine.
