Santana’s Vegan Grill makes the most of meat alternatives

  • Griffin Swartzell
When Texas chain Taco Bueno closed down all of its Springs locations, Santana’s Vegan Grill made the much-needed jump from drive-thru kiosk to this full fast-food space. They’ve also expanded their all-vegan offerings to include sausage, chicken strips, barbecue-sauced options and more. We zip through the drive-thru for an order of BBQ chicken strips, an Italian sausage and two smoothies: the strawberry dream and the berry and kale. The strips resemble Tyson’s kiddie chicken strips, and an order of seven sans fries lands petite, but they’ll fool the unsuspecting into thinking they’re meat. We find greater success in the sausage ‘wich, made with coarse-textured Beyond Sausage in a sesame seed roll, with roasted jalapeño slices and a thick, creamy sauce that evokes melted provolone. It makes for a smoky and rich bite overall. We’d pick the tart and fruity strawberry dream over the flatly sweet berry and kale, though that one’s a sure sell to the McD’s milkshake crowd.
