Rocky Mountain State Games

When: July 30-Aug. 1 2010

Most folks never come closer than their TV set to an actual Olympic-style opening ceremony, but in Colorado Springs we can see an excellent rendition at the Rocky Mountain State Games. This year's version, at 7 p.m. today at Colorado Springs World Arena (3185 Venetucci Blvd., 576-2626), includes American Idol performer Kimberly Caldwell as the entertainment headliner, ACRODUNK extreme slam-dunk group, the parade with thousands of athletes, and the traditional lighting of the cauldron, this time by 2010 Olympic bobsled champion Steve Holcomb of Colorado Springs. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and children, not bad for all the legitimate spine-tingling moments that come with it. Actual competition in 35 sports will continue through Sunday across the area. — Ralph Routon
