Tighten your viola strings, dust off that trombone and practice your chromatic scales because two local non-profit community orchestras are holding their auditions in the coming weeks. The Chamber Orchestra of the Springs (chamberorchestraofthesprings.org) is auditioning for all strings positions and a principal French horn on Monday, Aug. 22. Call Charlease at 635-6173 to make an appointment. The Pikes Peak Philharmonic (pikespeakphil.org) is searching for new players, especially strings as well as several principal parts and some substitutes. Their auditions are Tuesday, Aug. 30, and you can call 471-7605 to reserve a space.
The Misfits (misfits.com) always were a delicious way to mix Halloween with punk rock. Though Glenn Danzig left the group in '83 via escape pod, the seminal spooky punkers are back and on tour. They've never really seemed to be gone, though; their skully insignia is on everything nowadays. Catch them Monday, Oct. 3 at the Ogden Theatre (935 E. Colfax Ave., Denver). We're pretty sure they still sport the makeup and pointed-batwing haircuts that made them the New Kids on the Block of the goth crowd.
Some of you may already know, but some don't, and since this an equal-opportunity column ... Darkside (2106 E. Platte Ave.) has a theme nearly every goddamn night of the week, with DJs spinning retro (Tuesdays), rockabilly (Thursdays), and goth and industrial (Fridays). Mondays are for the punks and Wednesdays are metal-a-go-go, hosted by Mosh Pit Records. Punk and thrash DJs? The mind reels! Events start at 8, and you can always call 635-0657 for more.
Leechpit patriarch Adam Leech posted a notice to leechpit.com Monday afternoon announcing that he is no longer running for District 11 school board due to "serious and unexpected events." But don't fret, kids. He'll be at the store if you need him: "Just stop by and say 'hi,' and HANG IN THERE... public school is only temporary... someday you will run this world. I just hope you guys do better than we have so far."
