Red Aunts at Fem Fest, Saturday, May 12, 2 p.m., Museum of Contemporary Art, 1485 Delgany St., Denver, mcadenver.org
ave you ever heard of Red Aunts?” asks the self-described riot grrrl played by Jenna Elfman in a 1995 episode of the series Roseanne
. “Babes in Toyland? L7? Bikini Kill? It’s freedom-rock, man, turn it up.” While Red Aunts have never been overly fond of the riot grrrl categorization, it’s easy to understand how a sitcom scriptwriter would include the Long Beach band in the same breath as their better-known counterparts. Critics did much the same, not least because Terri Wahl’s taunting, larynx-shredding, punk-rock vocals would go down nicely in a duet with Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hanna. Two decades later, the band put out a 26-track compilation called Come Up for a Closer Look
, and has since played a handful of reunion gigs. Among them is this headlining appearance at Denver’s Museum of Contemporary Art as part of the all-day, all-ages Fem Fest, with additional performances by The Corner Girls, Rarebyrd$ and Princess Dewclaw. The event will also feature female comedian-led museum tours, rooftop tarot readings, and workshops on building sound-reactive LEDs and crafting with tampons.
