ed Hot Chili Peppers co-founder Flea has witnessed countless stellar performances in his time, but none more funky than a late-night set by the Rebirth Brass Band at their hometown Maple Leaf Bar. “Unbelievable,” tweeted the bassist during a New Orleans stopover, “hard as hell, free as a ray of light. There is not a band on earth that is better. Stunning.” That was back in May of 2012 and, within months, the two bands were out touring together. Fans of jazz, funk and brass band music, especially down in New Orleans, have followed the group for nearly 35 years now. From their prominent role in Treme
to their citywide music education initiative, the Rebirth Brass Band are an institution in the very best sense of the word.
