In the past 40 years, we have lost 52 percent of the world's biodiversity due to human activities that include polluting. By 2050, the amount of plastic in the ocean will outweigh the fish living there. The existence of 700 marine species is threatened by plastic. Our waste is killing our wildlife.
Over 200 municipalities have banned polystyrene containers. McDonald's and Dunkin' Donuts have also agreed to phase out foam cups and containers. Eight towns and cities in Colorado have banned disposable plastic shopping bags, but not yet polystyrene.
We can and will solve this critical issue. Americans throw away an estimated 70 million plastic foam cups a day, and about one-third end up in waterways like rivers, lakes and oceans. Let's take action and protect our waterways and our wildlife by banning foam cups and takeout containers here in Colorado.
