Reader: Bike lanes equal less traffic, and it's working

Lane success

The bike lanes on Cascade Avenue are working! Everyone who writes to complain about how little use there is, and what a waste of money they are, is missing an important point: These bike lanes are calming the traffic. I live in the Historic Old North End and the traffic on Cascade Avenue had become scary, fast and congested. The bike lanes have driven volume to other streets and have slowed the traffic on Cascade Avenue. Therefore, everyone complaining should decide if your desire to speed is more important than a neighborhood's desire for safer streets. I think folks need to refocus their ire on speeders, and stop using bike lanes as a meme for poor planning and government waste. They're a byproduct of traffic calming, and they work!
