Ska isn't dead, it's just been really horrible for the past four or five years," says Abe Groves, guitarist and backup vocalist for Springs group The Right Aways ( Groves and Adrian Norris (vocals and trombone), Steve Motzkus (trumpet), Adam Woloszyn (drums) and Paul Grow (bass) hope to change the status quo by deviating from ska's textbook suspendered and skanking formula. Influenced by many genres, their music features the traditional ska sound while incorporating elements of rock, funk, metal and whatever else gets the guys' checkered wristbands sweaty. The Right Aways frequently tour, but prefer hometown shows where fans are supportive of mixed-genre bills, like the one this Friday with hardcore honeys Harrison Bergeron and hip-hop's newly renamed Soul Food Hustle (formerly Accumen1).
