There are certain types of booze that simply do not infer the blues. Courvoisier and Dom Perignon, no. Whiskey, oh my yes. In fact, whiskey has had a long, proud tradition of providing some of the impetus behind the blues. An unhealthy fact, mind you, but great art often has a shady background. As a blues guitarist, Jimmy Thackery is well aware of whiskey's sordid past. He hooked up with legendary blues guitarist Tab Benoit, and together they recorded and toured as Whiskey Store. Their soul-drenched self-titled album won critical acclaim from critics and blues fans alike. A subsequent 2003 tour was such a great success that they decided to record and release Whiskey Store Live, an album that captures the high-energy performances that the duo became known for. Promoting the album, Thackery will be performing at the Annex Ballroom in Cañon City on Oct. 30. Benoit will not be present, but no matter -- Thackery is there to inject an audio version of grain alcohol into you on Saturday night.
