Fabulous 4th salute to our troops from Memorial Park
Memorial Park (corner of Pikes Peak and Hancock avenues)
July 4, 7 p.m. (no daytime activities)
While the "bombs bursting in air" have been all too literal in some parts of the world over the past few years, there's no reason not to appreciate the true spirit of Independence Day with some music and fireworks in traditional Colorado Springs style at Memorial Park with the Philharmonic playing Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture while the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment from Ft. Carson blasts its canons. The fact that the event is coming off at all this year is reason enough to celebrate, what with budget cuts and drought throwing a wrench in the spokes of performances and fireworks displays in recent years. Organizers are reminding people that barbecue grills, fires, alcohol, personal fireworks and pets are all prohibited in the park and that there are no daytime events. The Philharmonic will begin performing at 7 p.m. with Thomas Wilson conducting and vocalist Amy Sue Harding belting out a bunch of show tunes and patriotic ditties. There won't be any vendors on hand this year, so bring your picnic basket, sit back and think about what it truly means to be free.
