Banjo isn't the first instrument that comes to mind when most people hear the word "jazz." But when you're plying a musical trade with a tradition as long and rich as jazz, setting yourself apart isn't just a question of innovation, but a matter of survival. Enter New York-based jazz and bluegrass musician Tuey Connell, once a devoted bluegrass player la Bela Fleck, who turned his talents to jazz standards on his most recent album, Under the Influence. With a silky smooth baritone worthy of Sinatra, Connell does justice to everyone from Cole Porter to Marvin Gaye. "Obviously, the style of music I have chosen will never pit my talents against J-Lo's or Justin Timberlake's ... but then, who wants to these days?" says Connell. J-Lo on jazz banjo? Hmmmm.
