Navajo Hogan Roadhouse, 2817 N. Nevada Ave.
Fri.-Sat., July 12-13, 9 p.m.
John-Alex Mason has evolved from woodshedding local blues musician to a full-on bluesman, and as said bluesman, John-Alex, second from left, must now be surrounded by a covey of equally superpowered musicians, each specially trained in a different arena, such as drums or bass. Together, these Olympian musicians form the mythic blues band, a force not very unlike the Superfriends of Hanna-Barbera, casually poised to spread the gospel and thwart evildoers when required.
John-Alex calls this new creation The Hipshake, and it's got Cliff Rogers on both upright and electric bass, Brian Blair's subtle but meaty percussion and young Gerry Hundt unsettling some of the area's more established harp players with his bold, dexterous performances.
Having heard The Hipshake, one can only agree with this most suitable and fitting name. The band plays this weekend at the Hogan. Call 632-5490.
