Playing Around: Kansas

Whoever said arena rock was dead was horribly mistaken. Seventies legends Kansas, Foreigner, and Badfinger are all three performing this Sunday up at the Air Force Academy, as part of Summer Jam 2000. Local alterna-band Superball will open.

These three monsters of rock need no introduction. Many an evening was spent in the beanbag chair pondering how Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" could be so very right on, wiping the tears away as the bong gurgled in the background. Or perhaps it was a smoky party where you first heard the music of Foreigner -- insanely huge hits like "Cold as Ice," "Feels Like the First Time" and "Hot Blooded" providing the extra nudge you needed to talk to that hot girl with the metallic blue eyeliner. Badfinger sold 14 million albums in the early '70s, and like any self-respecting young American, you had one or two or six in your stack of LPs.

More than just fodder for the local classic rock stations, these bands hold a special place in the hearts of a large portion of the population. The Fraternal Order of Police will present the concert, which begins at 12:15 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance or $28 at the gate; kids eight and under are free. Call 576-2626.
