Playing Around: James Apollo Trio

There's a Johnny Horton version of "Rock Island Line" that epitomizes the vocal stylings of a rockabilly god. Yelping, squawking, squealing and high tenor crooning give the listener a mental picture of a young man going through a bad seizure, like Jerry Lee Lewis with the DTs. It's this precise rockavocalizing that has been the main influence on James Apollo, a guitarist/songwriter with really spectacular hair from Minneapolis. He's touring the country right now with the James Apollo Trio, the drum and bass required to create his rootsy, hiccuping concoction of sweet pop and lonesome highway blues-rock. His lyrics are neither sappy nor edgy, but instead locate themselves in a comfortable space that just about anyone with a bruised soul can identify with.

If you crave bright new artists with legitimate talent, this is a show not to miss. It's all-ages; call 268-9951 for details.
