Playing Around: Eden Automatic

Eden Automatic
  • Eden Automatic

Eden Automatic lead singer and guitarist Annette Conlon grew up in the Springs, and her parents still live here. What this means to you is: although the band now calls Dallas, Texas home, they always try to include a stop here in town when touring. The release of their new CD Glimmer provides the excuse this weekend, when Eden Automatic will play a three-day stint at The Ritz.

Glimmer showcases the vocal prowess of Conlon, whose voice and style is reminiscent of Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde. While short in range, Conlon's voice is rich and strong, with a strained, not-going-to-take-any-of-your-crap feel.

The music of Eden Automatic could be called "alternative," if used in the context of the very early '90s, when alternative rock really was. Hints of the Violent Femmes, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Pretenders and even the Velvet Underground are present among the propelling funk rhythms and understated instrumentation of drummer Jimmy Dereta, bassist Chris Harris and Conlon's husband Doug on guitars and vocals. The blend of outside influences and original lyrics results in a very danceable album, almost more suited to a live show than a CD player.

Eden Automatic's gigs will begin at 9:30 Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at The Ritz. There's no cover. Call 635-8484 for details.
