President Donald Trump's administration has unleashed a new attack against Planned Parenthood: a so-called "gag rule," soon to be published, that prevents health care providers who receive Title X funding from referring patients for abortions.
The Title X program helps about 4 million low-income people pay for birth control and reproductive health care. Planned Parenthood, which provides a range of services, serves about 40 percent of those patients.
"The gag rule is unacceptable," says Vicki Cowart, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, in an emailed statement. "... Reproductive health care is health care, and health care is a human right."
A statement from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services argues the rule "protects Title X healthcare providers so that they are not required to choose between participating in the program and violating their own consciences."
The rule will go into effect 60 days after it's formally published.
