Pile showcases its back catalog with Live at Third Man series

Boston’s Pile has won a fervent fan base for their passionate and sincere revival of 1990s-style math-rock, with hints of punkiness thrown in. But Pile’s studio efforts, like 2017’s A Hairshirt of Purpose, often don’t translate that enthusiasm, though the website offered two 2017 live downloads that demonstrated why there is so much excitement for the band. Now, Third Man Records is offering a more permanent artifact with its low-priced Live at Third Man series. The nine tracks here demonstrate Pile’s fierce and precise use of time signatures, while slower tracks like “Leaning On a Wheel” show off vocalist Rick Maguire’s writing talents. There is no better place to begin exploring Pile’s back catalog than this exuberant live album.
