Ground-breaking for the new Pikes Peak Summit Complex was held on June 4 with completion targeted for fall 2020.
The 38,000-square-foot complex will include a new visitor center and Colorado Springs Utilities communications facility. The Army will build a new High-Altitude Research Laboratory as well. GE Johnson Construction of Colorado Springs will build the new eco-friendly Summit House, designed by local firm RTA Architects and GWWO Architects of Baltimore. The $50 million project is funded by donations and toll-funded Pikes Peak – America's Mountain, a city enterprise.
Built in 1963, the existing Summit House will be open during construction. Complimentary shuttles will take visitors to the peak through Sept. 15. Information on that service and construction is at pikespeakcolorado.com.
