Pikes Peak Soapbox Derby

When: Sun., June 12, 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. 2016

If you thought soapbox derbies were a hobby relegated to old Dennis the Menace comics and Simpsons episodes, you would be incredibly wrong. This 82-year-old pastime is still thriving across the country, and the gravity-powered cars have evolved far beyond the rickety wooden crate contraptions of old. Modern soapbox cars are sleek feats of engineering built for speed. Today, you can watch these nifty vehicles — and their brilliant pint-sized operators — in action as 50 kids from the community race their handmade cars down Costilla Street for the chance to represent Colorado Springs next month at the International Soapbox Derby in Akron, Ohio. You can show your support by parking your comfiest lawn chairs on Costilla's epic hillside and cheering as these cool kiddos hurtle down to victory. 8 a.m., Costilla Street (between El Paso and Wahsatch), free, — Bridgett Harris
