Pikes Peak Soapbox Derby Rally Race

When: Sun., June 2, 8:30 a.m. 2013

There are lots of life lessons to be taken from an event like the Pikes Peak Soap Box Derby (ppsbd.com). As put on the website, it teaches children ages 7 to 17 "the basic skills of workmanship along with the spirit of competition and the perseverance to continue a project to completion." As importantly, however, you learn that cars are expensive — in this case, $650 to $795 for a kit. Plus, you learn that sponsors, who will help some kids defray the cost, make the world go round. Pick up some other nuggets at 8:30 this morning, on Costilla Street between Wahsatch Avenue and El Paso Street, when the PPSBD Practice and Rally Day begins. (Race day itself is June 9, and both events are free to attend.) — Kirk Woundy
