Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

When: Fri., July 17 and Sun., July 19 2009

As well-known as the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb might be as it heads into its 87th running, most people won't be spending their Sunday on the mountain watching it. From 5 to 10 p.m. today, though, thousands will swarm downtown Colorado Springs for the race's annual Fan Fest, covering seven city blocks spreading north and east from Pikes Peak and Cascade avenues. The free event (ppihc.com) features many top Hill Climb qualifying cars, even more drivers signing autographs, the race's mobile museum, freestyle motocross jumpers and displays of custom cars and motorcycles, along with two Budweiser beer gardens. It might even make you want to change your plans to see the race on Sunday. — Ralph Routon
