Piano with attitude

Founded in 1977 by Stephen Scott, Colorado College's internationally acclaimed music group the Bowed Piano Ensemble is an elite group of 10 student, faculty and staff musicians who strive to push the experimental envelope. Playing directly upon the strings of a grand piano, the group embarks on a musical journey that mirrors the orchestral array of tonal colors, harmonies and rhythms.

The ensemble, along with guest soprano soloist Victoria Hansen, presents the U.S. premiere of Scott's "The Deep Spaces" this Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in downtown Colorado Springs.

Ms. Hansen and the ensemble are recently returned from their European tour, which included the world premiere of "The Deep Spaces," a fantasy song cycle based on the power and majesty of Lake Como in Northern Italy.

The work is inspired by the words and music of poets and composers who were charmed by its beauty.

Ms. Hansen will sing a libretto composed of words from Pliny the Younger (one of ancient Rome's many historians and a Como native) and 21st-century Cuban poet Pablo Medina.

Musically, Scott embraces themes from composers linked to Como, including Liszt and Berlioz, weaving them together with his own melodies and textures.

The Bowed Piano Ensemble has toured extensively throughout Europe and records on the New Albion label. Their previous releases include Vikings of the Sunrise, Minerva's Web/The Tears of Niobe and New Music for Bowed Piano.
