The Human Bean, 275 E. U.S. Hwy. 24, Woodland Park, 922-4210, thehumanbean.com

This Ashland, Oregon-based coffee chain boasts on their website that the drive-thru in Woodland Park is their first in the Front Range. They roast all of their beans at their facility in Oregon. We go for a Mexi Mocha and seasonal Maple chai.

The former uses Ghirardelli chocolate sauce, a product that here ensures chocolate flavors reign over coffee notes, though we do read some cinnamon notes through it. Non-dairy types can take joy in the Human Bean’s offering of a variety of milk substitutes, not just the usual suspects like oat milk, but also macadamia nut milk, which does good things for our mocha’s texture.

Monin maple syrup and Oregon Chai’s concentrate compose the chai, which makes for a sweet, autumnal flavor with little spicy kick.

We’d add a shot of espresso to balance out its sweetness, but it’s far from bad and, moreover, available year-round.

Editor's note: The original version of this story has been updated to clarify this is the Ashland, Oregon-based coffee chain's first store in the Front Range.
