Once Upon a Time: The works of self-taught artist Martin Saldaña

When: Aug. 20-24 2013

Art patrons sometimes like to believe that the story behind the art doesn't matter — art for art's sake. Some stories are just too hard to deny, though. At 76 years old, Martin Saldaña took a children's art class at the Denver Art Museum. He spent the next 15 years teaching himself and producing a massive collection of art based on his childhood in Mexico. See a few of his extraordinary pieces at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center (30 W. Dale St., before it ends Sunday. Admission is $10 for adults and free for members. — Nathaniel Kelley
