ooking back to my pre-Metallica-cassette-buying days, when I was but a cherubic choirboy, the week of Thanksgiving during my childhood was inextricably linked to the annual Colorado Springs Philharmonic performance of Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker. This year, the Pikes Peak Center stage hosts five performances of the work (including matinee and evening presentations) from Nov. 24 through Nov. 26, performed by the Philharmonic, the Oklahoma City Ballet and the Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale.
If you’re unfamiliar with the plot of the Nutcracker, well, it’s about one of the aforementioned nut-breaking dolls who develops autonomy, fights a rat king, and absconds with a young girl to an alternate universe where various food items dance around. You know, good family entertainment for the holidays.

Meanwhile, here are some notable shows taking place across Colorado in the weeks ahead:

Feminist pop-punk duo Diet Cig will play Denver’s Lost Lake Lounge February 7.
