Laura Jane Grace & the Devouring Mothers, Bought to Rot (Bloodshot Records) – The transgender vocalist of punk band Against Me! has emphasized that this effort is a stretching of format from her band’s efforts. But while tracks like “Amsterdam Hotel Room” and “Screamy Dreamy” are loaded with ideas, the album is still chock-full of punk enthusiasm, often with layered vocals that incorporate hints of David Byrne and Tom Morello.

Paul Kelly, Nature (Cooking Vinyl) – Australia’s favorite bard Paul Kelly here serves up countrified ramblings that recall Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks arrangements. In his addition to his own poignant songwriting, Kelly here sets poems by the likes of Sylvia Plath, Walt Whitman and Dylan Thomas to music, with altogether impressive results.
