Neko Case, Father John Misty with the new and noteworthy

Neko Case, Hell-On (Anti-) - New Pornographers chanteuse Case proves once again that she can spin elaborate and surreal stories in her solo work, even while belting out her beautiful alto. Doug Gillard provides guitars this time, while tour guitarist Eric Bachmann sings a duet with Neko on Bachmann’s beautiful 2005 ballad “Sleep All Summer,” lifting this album to the top of the Case canon.

Father John Misty, God’s Favorite Customer (Sub Pop) – For a guy supposedly drowning in self-absorption, Josh Tillman has resurfaced with his second substantive album in just 15 months. While this one might not convey the profundity of last year’s Pure Comedy, tracks like “Mr. Tillman” deserve credit for wrapping wistfulness in a big chuckle.
