The touring Broadway musical Memphis is set in the 1950s, after W.C. Handy invented the blues on Beale Street, but before Martin Luther King Jr. came into town for the last time. The play, which features an eager white disc jockey in love with a talented black singer, doesn't shy away from racial issues, with songs like "Everybody Wants to Be Black on Saturday Night" or the intensely felt "Colored Women."
